Happy Dhanteras

Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi, marks the first day of the five-day Diwali festival. The word “Dhan” means wealth, and “Teras” refers to the thirteenth day of the lunar fortnight in the Hindu calendar month of Kartik. It is celebrated with great devotion and joy across India as a day of prosperity, good fortune, and health.

🪔 The Legend of Dhanteras

According to ancient Hindu mythology, there are two popular legends associated with Dhanteras:

1. The Story of Lord Dhanvantari

It is believed that on this day, Lord Dhanvantari, the divine physician and the God of Ayurveda, emerged from the ocean during the Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocean by the gods and demons).
He appeared carrying a pot of Amrit (nectar of immortality) and a holy text on Ayurveda, symbolizing health and longevity.
Thus, Dhanteras also honors Lord Dhanvantari as the deity of health and healing, and people pray for well-being and vitality.

2. The Legend of King Hima’s Son

Another famous story tells of a young prince, the son of King Hima, whose horoscope predicted that he would die of a snake bite on the fourth night after his marriage.

To protect him, his clever wife came up with a plan:

  • On that fateful night, she piled up all her ornaments and gold coins at the entrance of their room.

  • She lit countless diyas (lamps) and kept singing songs to keep her husband awake.

When Yama, the God of Death, came disguised as a serpent, he was dazzled by the brilliance of the lamps and gold.
Unable to enter, he sat on the pile and listened to the songs until morning.
Pleased by her devotion, Yama spared the prince’s life.
Since then, the day has been celebrated as Dhanteras, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness and life over death.

🌟 Why We Celebrate Dhanteras

On Dhanteras, people:

  • Buy gold, silver, or new utensils — a sign of welcoming Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth.

  • Light diyas at home to drive away negative energies.

  • Pray to Lord Dhanvantari for good health and longevity.

  • Decorate homes with rangoli and flowers to invite prosperity.

It’s believed that any purchase or new beginning made on this day brings luck, success, and happiness.

💫 Spiritual Meaning

Dhanteras teaches us that:

  • True wealth is not just gold or silver, but health, happiness, and harmony.

  • Light represents knowledge and hope, dispelling ignorance and fear.

  • Prosperity comes when we live with gratitude, kindness, and faith.

💛 Happy Dhanteras!

May this Dhanteras bring you:
✨ Wealth as deep as the ocean,
💎 Health as pure as gold,
🌸 And happiness as radiant as the diyas that light your home!
